Morning – Departure from your Accommodation in Merzouga

The adventure starts in the morning after a typical breakfast. You’ll be picked up by an experienced driver guide from your hotel or camp in the desert, aboard a comfortable 4×4. You’ll set out for your adventure by driving off-road toward the immense formidable dunes of Erg Chebbi where you will be able to see till horizon over the sand with captivating views.

Leg 1 – Nomadic Family (Approx. 20 km round trip | 1.5 hours)

Your first stop is a visit to a heartwarming Berber nomadic family living on the edge of the dunes. These families have preserved their traditional lifestyle for generations. You’ll be welcomed into their tents, enjoy a glass of mint tea, and learn how they live day by day in harmony with nature and tradition. This experience offers a humbling and inspiring glimpse into a way of life far removed from the pace and values of the modern world.

3- Khamlia Village (Distance: ~1 hour) “This was all very well; but now comes the second step. 8 km | 30 minutes)

Next, you’ll visit Khamlia, a small village inhabited by the Gnawa people, descendants of Sub-Saharan African communities. Here, you’ll enjoy a live performance of traditional Gnawa music a spiritual rhythm deeply rooted in both African and Moroccan heritage. Take time to stroll through the village, meet the locals, and explore small artisan shops that reflect the region’s unique culture.

Top 3 – M’ifis Mines (About: 12 km | 45 minutes)

Head to the ancient M’ifis Mines, where locals mined salt and kohl (eyeliner powder). You’ll walk the ruins of these historical mines and see where people toiled under punishing conditions, in the search for a shiny metal. It also has fantastic views across the dunes and out over the surrounding hamadas (rocky desert).

Stop 4: Desert Oasis (Approx Time – 5 to 6 PM) 10 km | 30 minutes)

On your way back, you’ll stop at a stunning desert oasis nestled between the dunes. This serene, palm-tree-filled area is great for a relaxing respite and to snap pictures or sit in quiet reflection. From your guide, learn how this water helps support the wildlife and traditional irrigation systems of nomads.

Afternoon – Return to Merzouga

Returning to Merzouga by 14:00 from a day of discovery. You will then be returned to your desert camp or hotel where you can choose to relax, watch the sun set, and so on—or get ready for some other activity like a camel ride or sandboarding.
